Adoption policy & procedures... A must read for anyone who fills out the application
Adoption process:
** We do not adopt out into homes that have intact dogs or dogs with behavioural challenges .This is firm **
1. A fully completed Adopt-a-Pet application emailed to us
2. Feedback given, clarification requested and/or requirements advised
3. Completion of Step 2 requirements
4. Confirmation of approval provided
5. A viewing of the pet in the foster home by ALL family members and any existing dogs.
6. Sober second thought – for the applicant and the Rescue
7. A home visit will be completed in the applicants home with ALL family members present and existing dogs. The home visit is filled by one of our rescue volunteers, or a volunteer from a fellow rescue we network with.
8. Feedback given and/or requirements advised
9. Completion of Step 8 requirements
10. Adoption day!! - where the approved applicant will pickup their new addition at the foster home. We do not deliver our pets.
Purpose: To ensure the best possible match with the most committed family is made for each animal. To ensure the health and happiness of the pet during its lifetime. See Adoption FAQ for more information

· Homes with children over 3 years of age who do not understand and display respect and boundaries with animals and people
· homes with unstable animals (food/toy/space guarding, human or animal aggression, etc.)
· animals for gifts or surprises
· outdoor dogs or cats
· dogs for the purpose of property protection
· exceeding your jurisdiction's allowed dog or cat limit
· plans for de-clawing
· plans for aesthetic surgery, i.e. tail docking, ear cropping, etc.
· homes with intact animals – male or female
Purpose: The protection of all animals in our care which, in our experience, precludes the above conditions.

Adoption Adjustment Period
It is highly recommended that Adoptive homes give their new pet a minimum of two months to "settle in" and work with a trainer if necessary.
Purpose: It is not unusual for an animal to take longer than a month to learn the expectations and routines of a new home. By giving the animal time to settle in and the family time to connect with their new pet, a much deeper bond and healthier relationship is formed. · Spay/neuter
· Canine vaccinations (rabies, DHPP [distemper, adenovirus/hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus] and leptospirosis. Bordatella for US dogs)
· Feline vaccinations (rabies, distemper, herpes type 1, calicivirus and bordatella)
· Heartworm testing and treatment (if necessary) for US dogs
· Heartworm preventative (usually Advantage Multi or Revolution)
· Fecal testing for US dogs
· De-worm all pups, dogs, cats and kittens.
· Treat for parasites as needed (usually with Advantage Multi)
· Treat for fleas, ticks, ear mites if necessary. Revolution brand prevention in spring, summer & early fall.
· Feline testing for aids and leukemia
· Microchip implantation

· Rescue ID tag for dogs

To ensure foster families and adoptive families are beginning a relationship with a pet whose health is understood as much as is reasonably possible and which exceeds provincial vaccination recommendations. Ultimately this is for the long term benefit of the animal.
All animals will receive the following veterinary care:

Reclaiming animals from pounds and shelters in the care of Pet Rescue
The original owner must complete all normal adoption steps and pay all pound and Pet Rescue fees.
Purpose: The pound or vet clinic, by giving an animal to us after its 72 hour hold is completed, has deemed us the legal owner. We reserve the right to place the animals where we believe they will be safe and happy.

Owner pet surrenders
· The original owner will not receive money or remuneration in any form for the pet from Adopt-a-Pet Pet Rescue.
· The original owner must provide truthful and complete information on the Owner Surrender Form.
· The original owner must contact their veterinarian to authorize the release of all medical records for the pet.
· By completing and submitting an Owner Surrender Form you are agreeing to our policies and processes. Breaking any of our policies may result in legal action. It will result in the original owner's name being placed on a Rescue network Ban list.
· Once the pet is surrendered and is placed in foster care, the original owner relinquishes all rights and privileges for the animal.
· Should an original owner decide to reclaim their pet after it has been placed with the Rescue, they must follow standard adoption protocols (including fees).
Purpose: To ensure both Adopt-a-Pet Pet Rescue and the original owner are aware of obligations, responsibilities and rights for the pet from the time the animal is accepted into the Rescue until it is adopted. This is for the benefit and stability of the dog.

3. A home visit/assessment will be conducted to review the condition and temperament of your pet.
4. The original owner will assist in the transport of the pet to the Rescue’s foster home
5. If accepted & once the pet is in foster care, the original owner relinquishes all rights and privileges for the animal.
** Alternate consideration ** - If the owner / care-giver wishes to keep the pet thru the rescues pre-set screening and adoption process we are happy to still assist . Please indicate this on our surrender checklist. The owner/ care-giver will be part of the screening and approval process to have the pet placed in an approved home .The process for this will reviewed and approved on a case by case as needed.
6. Should the pet be adopted out but need to be returned at anytime , the pet will be returned to the rescue and placed in a suitable foster home that meets its needs.
7. All further actions and results are then the responsibility of the Rescue – following normal policy and process as applies to any animal brought into our care.
